I’ve spent the last week away from childminding co-leading a Birmingham PHAB camp – a funpacked holiday experience for disabled children. We have enjoyed iceskating, sailing, film making, samba dancing, swimming, shopping and partying amongst other things and I’m now recovering nicely in time for my usual job tomorrow. The theme of the week was hats and we had a great time incorporating hats into every activity with the highlight being our hat animation movie – thanks to Reel Access (www.reelaccess.org.uk).
The week away fills me with fresh inspiration for my childminding, invaluable practise in care for disabled children topping up my past experience and, most importantly, a revitalised ‘buzz’ inevitably caught from the enthusiastic hard working volunteers we take with us. Thanks to Maxine, Sue, Thelma, Lizzie, Annie, Ronnie, Reg, Tina, Bryony, Howard, Ellie, Emma, Amy C, Amy R, Sanjeev, Ali, Thomas, my Dad and all the kids for making the week so amazing. Thank you also to Glamba for providing the Samba entertainment (www.glamba.co.uk – any events they are involved with are definitely worth exploring for childminders in the West Midlands) and Sailability (www.rudyardsailability.org.uk/) for their expertise on the water.
